Nicky studied for her Masters Degree in Music Performance at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, specialising on flute and piccolo, studying under Jonathan Burgess of the Orchestra of the Welsh National Opera.

Nicky has been working with pianist Sandra Baranauskiene for the past couple of years and they were awarded outstanding in both their classes as the Kent Festival of Music, Speech and Drama in 2024.

Previously, she was awarded 2nd place in the International Soloist Competition at the Kent Competitive Festival (2002), was a finalist in the Russell Shepherd Instrumentalists Solo Competition (2009) and has competed with numerous bands including Brides of Rain, winner of the Masses Competition (2012).

Nicky has worked with local composer Diane Wilks on a number of recording projects and performed at the International Composers Festival in Bexhill (2022). She has also recorded for the band Bellerphon (2018), for Jacob Bride, Composer, for various projects (2017/18) and with Maidstone Wind Symphony (2015) for R Smith and SPS sample CD, demonstrating solo flute with wind orchestra.

In schools

Evenings at Brittens Music

Flute, Cello, beginner Trumpet/Cornet Classes at Brittens Music Evenings are available with Nicky through Brittens Music in Tunbridge Wells. Here Nicky offers flute, cello and trumpet/cornet. Flute: Nicky teaches up to grade 8 and beyond Cello: Nicky teaches up to grade 6 Trumpet/Cornet: Nicky teaches up to grade 3

Theory

Nicky offers theory lessons up to grade 5 ABRSM. Some theory is incorporated into instrumental lessons but keep up with playing levels Nicky also offers extra theory lessons too (especially when building up to higher grades to achieve grade 5 theory in good time). Lessons can be face to face or online & are based around the ABRSM workbooks per grade. Through Brittens Music Nicky also offers a 4 day intensive grade 5 theory course at the end of each summer school holiday (end of August), aiming to prepare students to take the exam online shortly afterwards. Students need to be a confident grade 3 minimum theory knowledge prior to this course. On the last afternoon students sit an exam which are marked and feedback given, helping identify areas that need most focus for thorough understanding.

General teaching/lesson information

Nicky has been teaching for over 30 years and adjusts her lessons to each student, working with individual requirements and preferences, supporting exam progress if required and enjoying a wide range of repertoire for all instruments offered. If for any reason Nicky is unable to attend a lesson, the lesson will not be charged for and Nicky will contact you with various options. For lessons that students are unable to attend, Nicky requires a minimum of 24hrs notice otherwise lessons will still be charged for.

Flute

Sandra Baranauskiene

Pianist

Sandra is a talented pianist and teacher from Lithuania. She studied for her Bachelor Degree in Music Performance at the Panevezio Conservatoire, PTC Teachers Qualification from the London Purcell School and is training to become a Suzuki teacher with Jenny Macmillan.  Sandra has participated in numerous international workshops and competitions, awarded 1st round winner at the XI International Competitions of Young Musicians, Latvia (2001) and International Piano Duets Competition, Holland (1997), Awarded diploma at the International Seminar “Amber Sitting Room” Lithuania (1995, 1996, 1998 & 1999), Winners Diploma in the International Piano Duets Competition, Belgium (1999) and 1st prize winner at the Duets Competition, Lithuania (2000).
